C

an the growing season be coming to a close already? Seems like we were just getting our gardens ready for planting. Is it because summer didn’t really start until sometime in July this year?

Once again the CDS Annual show in August came off without a hitch. My sincere thanks to all of you that worked so hard to make this important event a success. You will find the list of winners of the various competing classes on the second page of this newsletter. The CDS membership also left their mark at many of our neighboring societies shows. Our members received many higher awards and some very nice blooms were brought into the shows. I believe Connecticut must win the award for most blooms brought to the shows as the vans, trucks and cars full of blooms arrived. Supporting our neighboring societies is important and I would ask that if you have not traveled to some of these shows that you give it a try. Great fun and fellowship! I would also like to thank our neighboring societies for their hospitality.

We will once again run the “Best October Bloom” competition at the October meeting. The two classes will be (AA, A or B) and (BB and smaller) Please bring your own staging containers.

Also at the October meeting we will hold a root dividing demonstration. This is a key part of growing that is easy to do but can be somewhat intimidating to newer growers. We will also answer questions about winter storage and provide tips for success on this aspect of root storage. It seems that storing dahlia roots over winter is one of the more challenging tasks of growing but it doesn’t have to be if you have the right technique. Please remember to put a few roots aside for out April root sale.

So that brings us to a close for now. Happy digging.

Jesse Peterson, CDS President

Display Garden News

The garden is in full bloom now and is certainly a focal point of the park. Many, many visitors thank us for the garden and to listen to the comments from them the public finds the blooms amazing.

We will be digging and dividing the roots from the garden during October and if you would like to participate in this activity please let me know. It can be both a learning activity and a good CDS project.

                               In Memoriam

                             Alan R. Grimm

Long time CDS member Al Grimm passed away on August 1, 2003.  Al was a long time member of the Long Island and Mid Island Dahlia Societies as well.

He was a Senior Judge and a faithful attendee of our CDS shows. Al originated the varieties: Lady Darlene 213, B FD DB R/Y and Lady Linda G. 354 BB SC V OR/R, both in 1884 and Lady Rowena 268 B IC L in 1977.

To honor him, the Long Island Dahlia Society has chosen his most famous origination “Lady Darlene” as the Neckerman Classic variety for their 2004 NADC show. We extend our sympathies to his wife Rowena and family.
