President's Message…

Where was all this rain when we needed it most back in July and August?  It's either feast or famine when it comes to water this year.  October broke all rainfall records for the month.  There's nothing worse than trying to dig dahlia roots out of heavy, wet much!  Watch your poor backs!  As I write this newsletter late October there has still been no killing frost and another two inches of rain is forecast for today.  I went out to the dahlia garden last night before the rain started and picked a few dahlia bouquets ahead of the damaging wind and rain.  We may not have had great fall color from the trees this year, but the color in the dahlia gardens has been spectacular!

Before you go any further reading this newsletter, please mark your calendars with this important date - Saturday, December 3rd, 2005 is the date of the CDS Annual Christmas Party!  Joe Jasonis has offered to host this annual event at his home.  It will be on the 1st Saturday in December.  Directions to Joe's house are included with this newsletter.  Please save them.  Other plans for the holiday party will be discussed at the November meeting.

Our October meeting was well attended by many members and quite a few dahlia blooms were presented for our October best bloom contest.  Winners were Jonas Karosas - Large Hamari Sunshine BIDY; Marge Schnerr - Small Alice Denton BB SC L.  Congratulations to our winners and a big thank you to all who participated.

The display garden was cut down on the 16th of October.  The plans were pretty tired looking and many had stopped blooming.  A few people stopped by to say how much they enjoyed the dahlia blooms and watching the plants grow.  It is nice to hear these comments.  All the hard work really doesn't go unnoticed.  Thanks again to Jessie Peterson, Display Garden Coordinator and all those who helped out with the garden this year.  The dahlia roots from the display gardens still need to be dug, divided and stored.  If you can help out, please give Jessie a call at (860) 485-0326.

The November meeting will be my last serving as your President.  I would like to thank my other officers Marge Schnerr, Donna Pasternostro, Barbara LaRochelle and Becky Raiola-Paul for all of their hard work and support.  A new slate of officers will be voted in at the November meeting.  Please try to attend and cast your vote.  A quorum of 15 members is needed to vote in our new slate.  Your vote is important!

Hope to see you at the November meeting…

Sincerely,

Kevin Wasilewski

C.D.S. President
