November 2003 Newsletter
Program: Annual Meeting and Election of Officers
Well, hopefully most of us will have had the opportunity to finish up our garden chores by this time. Digging, dividing and preparing our roots for storage takes center stage for this month. For many of us this time is bittersweet. Its the end of the dahlia season and working in our gardens on a sunny afternoon. Its also a time to begin anticipating next season. Hopefully you were inspired from some of the blooms in the area shows or maybe a fellow grower shared some techniques that you will try next season. We dahlia growers are never quite satisfied with what we did this year and we always believe next year will be better. With careful observation and good planning its a real possibility.
Some things to think about for future planning:
· Discuss plans for our December Christmas party
· Programs for the January, February, and March meetings
· Planning for our April root sale date and location
· Same for our May plant sale
· Set a date for the July picnic (we have a location as discussed at the last meeting)
If we have time at the November meeting it would be good for us to begin some of this planning and get input from the membership.
The November meeting will be the last one that Phyllis Mulcahy will act as treasurer for the society. Phyllis has been the CDS treasurer for 12 years and has decided to move on to new ventures. I mention this because the dedication that Phyllis has given to the society cannot be imagined. Phyllis, on behalf of the CDS I want to thank you for all of the years of service you have given us. It has truly been a pleasure working with you.
In closing, this will be my last newsletter to all of you. The past four years as vice-president and president have been a wonderful learning experience for me and I have enjoyed the opportunity to be an officer in the Connecticut Dahlia Society. Most of all I enjoyed the fun, fellowship and support I received from the membership and from our neighboring societies. I would especially like to thank my fellow officers, Kevin, Marge, Phyllis and Barbara who made my job as president so enjoyableJ
Jesse Peterson, CDS President
The garden was
hit by frost on around October 17th this year. It had put on a
dazzling display throughout the blooming season.
As of this date,
Dave Murphy has cut all of the canes and soon we will begin the digging and
dividing chores. There is a lot of activity in the area as the City of
Thanks to all of
the volunteers that supported the garden throughout the
season.
