The
Connecticut Dahlia Society
May 2007 Newsletter
Meeting Date: Sunday, May 20, 2007
Time: 2:00 pm
Place: Thomaston Bank, 985 Watertown Ave. Waterbury
Program: Root Auction Critique & 50th.
Anniversary Show
We had a very
successful Root Auction on April 22nd. Many thanks go to our members, Jon
Wooten for his donation of roots for the bins sales, Joe Jasonis for his
auctioneering skills, and the many members who worked at the auction and also
those members who donated their roots.
The response by the
public this year to our auction was overwhelming, so much so, that next year we
need to plan at this May meeting for a somewhat revised format for 2008 to accommodate
an anticipated even larger number of the public being in attendance.
Next year the CDS
will celebrate our 50th. Anniversary and we have discussed the possibility of
holding our show for two days in order to share our magnificent blooms with the
large amount of visitors who visit Elizabeth Park on Sunday. Our 2001 show was
held on a Sunday at the Park due to a scheduling conflict with the facility and
we found that the number of visitors in the Park on Sundays far exceeds the number
on Saturdays. Therefore the decision
to hold a two day show next year in honor of our 50th. Anniversary will be
placed for a vote at the May Meeting so your attendance is requested to help us
make a wise choice on the matter.
By the time you receive
this Newsletter many of you will have been well into the preparation of your
gardens for planting. Our show this
year is on August 25th. That is fairly
early so please try to get some of those early bloomers planted as soon as
possible so that you can get some winning blooms into our show.
Marge Schnerr, President
Display Garden
Update:
Once again we are preparing the Elizabeth Park
Display Garden. Our garden has been a
focal point in the park for many years now and is looked forward to by the
park’s many visitors. Holding a
prominent place next to the road it is seen by virtually every park
visitor. This year as always we are
relying on CDS members to volunteer their services and help maintain the
garden. The garden has been weeded and
over the next couple of weeks the stakes will be driven in and hopefully it the
weather cooperates we will plant on May 26th.
A special need this year will be to replace the post
that holds our sign describing the various dahlia varieties. If you are handy with woodworking this would
be much appreciated.
If you are able to help with this year’s garden
please contact me at e-mail: jessepj@sbcglobal.net
or telephone: 860-485-0326. Happy
Gardening!
