President’s Message:

With the above average temperatures, it seems that spring cannot be far away. This is a good time for members to check their roots in storage and remove any that are rotted. It is also a good time to visit commercial dahlia growers which can found on our website, Connecticutdahlia.com, and clicking the “Dahlia Finder” or “Dahlia Sources” buttons at the top of the screen.

Our meeting in January was very productive. We talked about ways to increase the number of active members of CDS which has not increased much in years. We should all try get our friends and acquaintances more interested in dahlias. This year we will try to recruit new members by making our Website more effective and informative, using the Root Auction to place as many roots as possible among serious growers, and trying to make as many members as possible available to talk about dahlias to visitors at our 50^th Anniversary Show this August.

Many of the topics at the January meeting were inevitably controversial, but must be addressed if we are to make CDS more accessible and attractive to new members. These issues include the dates and times of our monthly meetings and finding ways to spread the gospel on dahlias at our two major public events, the Root Auction and the Annual Show. We plan to discuss these and other topics in more detail at our February show and look forward to seeing all of you there.
