President's Message…

Greetings to all.  Bad weather conditions forced the cancellation of our January meeting.  If there is ever a question of whether the meeting is cancelled or not please feel free to call any of the officers on your membership list for that information.  Also, at the bottom of the newsletter will be posted my home phone number as well as Marge Scherr’s to call if you can’t locate your membership list.

Mother Nature has once again blanketed our region with some extremely cold temperatures with wind chill factors well below 0 F.  Please check your dahlia storage areas to make sure your roots are protected from extreme cold.  If you haven’t done so, please also check roots in storage for any rotting or drying out problems.

Have you placed your dahlia order yet for Spring 2005?  Many of the new catalogs are now out and many growers sell out quickly.  Also many dahlia growers can be found on the Internet at: www.dahlias.net/supplierlst.htm (not a typo…watch your spelling of “list”).  This site contains over 70 mail order dahlia companies.  Many of these sites have color photos and lots of great information posted.  If you’re looking for a particular dahlia variety and want to know where to find it you can go to www.dahlias.net/dbiglist.htm (this one is correctly spelled “list”). The list contains over 8,000 varieties and lists which suppliers may be selling the one specimen you’re looking for.  Most growers sell out early so place your dahlia orders now so you won’t be disappointed.

There will be a slide presentation and an open discussion on creating a dahlia basket arrangement for showing.  We will also go over the judging of dahlia arrangements and what the judges look for when picking a blue ribbon winner.  It should be fun to hear from different growers how they go about creating a winning entry and give helpful tips to those who would like to try putting a basket together.

Just a reminder, your Connecticut Dahlia Society Membership dues and A.D.S. dues are now due.  A membership form was sent out in the last newsletter.  Please fill this out if you haven’t already done so and get it in the mail ASAP!  Thank you.

Sincerely,

Kevin Wasilewski

C.D.S. President
