President’s Message:

As our recent frost has reduced my dahlia patch to blackened remnants of their earlier majesty, the task of digging, dividing and storing tubers brings regret but also the promise of great things next year.  Out next show will mark the fiftieth anniversary of CDS and we are dedicated to making it the best show we have ever held.  Everyone is helping to implement improvements and select the best ribbon designs and prizes we have awarded.  I hope everyone is already putting a list together of varieties to buy this winter and planning the dahlia garden for our anniversary year.

I’d like to thank Marge Schnerr upon the completion of her fourth two year term as president of CDS.  As well leading CDS for eight years spread our over three decades, it is hard to think of anyone who has contributed more to our Society.  She has been our Judges Chairman for years.  She has represented NADC on the ADS Classification Committee for many years and has been a leading grower over her entire time in CDS.  She has been a senior judge as long as I have known her, and has taught me and lots of others a lot of what we know about growing dahlias.  Marge, it has been a privilege to serve with you as Vice President the last two years.

I joined CDS almost 30 years ago when we moved to Connecticut.  Some of the middle years  were off and on.  It has been an honor to meet so many great dahlia growers over those years, some who have passed on.  It has also been rewarding to participate along with our great members who collaborate in the huge effort to produce our annual show, root auction, parties and picnics.

One or the great developments for CDS over the last two years has been the creation of our own website.  It is a great way to communicate with our members regarding schedule and activities, but also to distribute pictures of flowers and our members in our show, tips on dahlia culture.  I hope to keep expanding the website to broaden the culture advice and keep up the photo galleries or our shows and gardens.  It now has all our newsletters and show pictures dating back to 2003.

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the December 1st. Christmas Party.

Best wishes for the holidays and a Happy New Year!

Jon Wooten President,
