President’s Message…

Our November Meeting saw the end of Kevin Wasilewski’s term as President and we thank him for a job well done.  This was Kevin’s second time around in this position, having also served as President from 1995 to 1997.  During this term as President  he also undertook the duties of Show Administration, which encompasses a large portion of the behind the scenes tasks that make for a successful show.  Kevin continues to present programs on dahlia growing to numerous organizations in the state throughout the year to promote the dahlia.

I undertake this position for my fourth term as President of this society.  It is with pleasure that I have been a part of this organization for the past 35 years.  This society has made many advances in recent years.  Eight years ago we moved to Elizabeth Park for our shows.  The Park has provided us with storage facilities for our show equipment and we have provided them with a Display Garden for their visitors to enjoy.

Recent years have seen Connecticut Dahlia Society members’ blooms have a dominant presence on the Courts of Honor in many NADC shows.

Five years ago we made our Newsletter available through the Internet to those members with access.  This month we have taken and other giant step forward with the introduction of our own website, please see below.  So it is with big expectations that the CDS moves into 2006.

Best wishes for the holidays and a Happy New Year!

Marge Schnerr, President

CDS Website Introduced…

Jon Wooten presented the project he undertook, to create a CDS Website.  He presented the website for approval of all in attendance at our November Meeting and it was met with great awe.  We are indebted to him for all of the hours of work that he has put into it.  He is seeking contributions of photos and articles to add to it.  It has many links to other worthwhile dahlia sites.  You will be amazed at it.  Go to:

Gullikson Medal Awarded to CDS Member

Joyce Sterling, of Needham, MA, CDS member for many years, has been notified that her origination “Bay State Angel” mignon single, light blend, white/yellow, had the highest average bench score evaluation for an “Other Type” dahlia in the ADS Seedling Bench Evaluation for 2005. Her son, Nicholas Sterling, exhibited this variety in a number of NADC Shows this year. The Gullikson Medal is the counter part to the Dudley Medal that is awarded for fully double varieties.  The medal is named in honor of Evie Gullikson who introduced many award winning Other Types over the years.

Congratulations, Joyce and Nicholas!
