CDS 2008 Root Auction and Sale The 2008 Root Sale will take place April 20 at 12:00 Noon. We expect to have over 1000 tubers of the best show winning varieties for sale individually or at a reduced price for groups of 10. The majority of the roots will be sold from bins at this time. The Root Auction, a long time CDS tradition, will begin at 1:00 PM. The Root Auction is for dahlia varieties which are scarce or desirable new varieties which have not found wide distribution. This is a great opportunity to get a lot of roots at bargain prices, particularly for the new grower. |

2007 Annual Picnic The 2007 Picnic was at at the 2.5 acre Wooten residence on Southport Harbor. The regulars and new members were greeted by over 500 dahlias of nearly 100 varieties, many in bloom. In addition to the dahlias, there were a variety of other garden attractions including over 1,000 clumps of daylilies, many orienpet lilies, climbing roses, southern magnolias, many varieties of hollies and many other annuals, perennials and shrubs. We would like to thank all the participants for coming and bringing all the delicious food. |

Dahlia Tips As the shows approach, now is the time to spend time disbudding and making sure the plants are not stressed by water shortage. Despite the ample to excessive moisture this year, if it hasn't rained for a week or more, plan on adding a gallon of water per plant per week. August is the time to watch for damage from mites, evidenced by pale blotches on lower leaves with the dull appearance of the webs. Mites can be seen with a magnifying glass and must be controlled before major damage appears. Spray with Ortho Systemic, Avid, Kelthane or several other effective Miticides. Here is some Mite Information.

Dahlia Facts Dahlias were discovered by Spanish Conquistadors on the slopes of Volcanoes in Mexico. They have been developed over the years to become the most beautiful of all display flowers. This year, our members had flowers in bloom from June 13 to November 10. This 5 month blooming season is unparalleled among showy perennials and even most annuals. Dahlias come in 19 forms, in almost all colors except pure blue, and from under 1" in diameter to 13" or more. If you have a favorite color, it is likely to be found in a Dahlia variety. Check out Dahlia Types.

Elizabeth Park Display Garden, Hartford The Connecticut Dahlia Society maintains a display garden of approximately 100 of mostly "Fabulous Fifty" Dahlias. This garden may be viewed all summer and part of the fall in Elizabeth Park. It is a great place for people who are not familiar with the range of forms and colors available in top Dahlia varieties. These dahlias are left in their natural state and are not disbranched and disbudded as are dahlias to be exhibited in shows. The results are still impressive with masses of colorful blooms from July on. The display garden was cut down on the 16th of October, and number of people stopped by to say how much they enjoyed the dahlia blooms and watching the plants grow. Thanks to all the volunteers who worked in the Display Garden, and especially to Jesse Peterson, Display Garden Coordinator.
